Exercise 5.1.1: Plane wave in a dielectric
Two further exercises on the wave, in the spirit of Home exercise 5.1.1. They use only the equations listed at the head of this subsection.
Plane wave in a dielectric
#In a lossless medium with , the electric field is at . (a) Find the phase velocity , the wavelength and the wave number . (b) Use Faraday's law to find and the intrinsic impedance . (c) Verify the Ampère–Maxwell equation with the found.
Home exercise 5.1.1 with replaced by . Faraday's law gives from by one integration in time, and the Ampère–Maxwell equation must then be satisfied by the same .
Repeating the derivation of Home exercise 5.1.1 with and , the two curl equations are consistent only if :
. Integrating in time,
and . They are equal if , that is , the same as in (b).
The dielectric preset is this exercise: read , , and .
Units: is . In a dielectric the wave is slower by , the refractive index ( here, a typical glass), and shorter by the same factor. is larger for the same because is smaller. Both results are used in the language of media of Section 3.4 and in every optics course.
