6 Plane Electromagnetic Waves
Uniform plane waves in free space and in different media, the flow of electromagnetic power, and reflection and transmission at plane boundaries.
Chapter 5 showed that Maxwell's equations admit electromagnetic waves. This chapter studies the simplest of them, the uniform plane wave: how it travels and carries power in free space, how it propagates in other media, and what happens when it meets the boundary between two media.
