Two probes
#A wave travels along in a lossless nonmagnetic medium. Two small probes, apart on the -axis, record
- Write both phasors. List all values of that fit the data.
- The medium is known to have . Find , , , and .
- For what spacing would the reading be unique for any ?
For a wave towards the phasor at is the phasor at times . A measured phase lag fixes only up to a multiple of , and extra knowledge about the medium picks one value.
and . From ,
with for travel to . With ,
leaves only :
For , lies between and . The reading is unique when the whole range of is shorter than :
At , . The next candidate, , would give , the same reading.
This is the ambiguity of Problem 5.6.12 in another form: phase is measured modulo . With the range of is , so two values of between and fit the data. A shorter spacing, or a second frequency, removes the ambiguity.
