Problem 5.6.1: Reading a monochromatic wave
Reading a monochromatic wave
#The electric field component of a monochromatic wave is given as
- Find the frequency of this wave.
- Determine the phase velocity.
- Calculate the period and the wavelength.
- Express this field in time-harmonic form.

Compare the argument of the cosine with of Eq. (5.6.1): the coefficient of is , the part that depends on position is . Everything else follows from , , and .
The amplitude is , along . and , so . The argument is with a minus sign: a crest moves towards .
, so and :
Write the cosine as the real part of an exponential and separate the time factor:
The factor that multiplies is the phasor:
, the same as . In Figure 5.6.12a every quarter period () moves the whole pattern a quarter wavelength () towards , which is again. In the surface of the statement the ridges are the crests, and their slope in the plane is the phase velocity.
, so the wave is not in free space. A lossless nonmagnetic medium with would fit, which is about polyethylene. The phasor has a constant length, and its angle falls by rad per metre: one full turn per wavelength (Figure 5.6.12b).
