Problem 6.1.3: Elliptical polarisation
Elliptical polarisation
#The electric field of a plane wave travelling towards in a lossless medium is
- Trace at and find the sense of rotation.
- Find the semi-axes, the axial ratio (also in dB) and the tilt angle of the polarisation ellipse.
- Decompose the wave into an RHCP and an LHCP wave. Which fraction of the power does each carry? What would a linear antenna along receive?
Adapted from: S. J. Orfanidis, Electromagnetic Waves and Antennas, Example 2.5.1(d).
Read and from the phasor, then use the ellipse formulas, Eq. (6.1.58), and the circular components, Eq. (6.1.61).
At , and :
The tip moves from the first quadrant down through the axis into the fourth quadrant: clockwise seen with pointing towards the viewer. This agrees with the rule, Eq. (6.1.56), : left-handed.
, so
In decibels . The tilt: , so and . The major axis lies on the line .
With ,
Both circular waves have , so the power splits as :
An -directed linear antenna sees only : .
Turn on "RHCP + LHCP parts" below: the big left-handed circle of radius and the small right-handed one of radius add up to the ellipse.
and confirms the left hand.
