Home exercise 6.2.2: Sounding the F layer
Sounding the F layer
#The peak electron density of the F layer is . Collisions and the earth's magnetic field are neglected.
- Find the critical frequency (highest frequency reflected at vertical incidence).
- An ionosonde sends vertically. At what electron density is it reflected?
- Find the maximum usable frequency for a ray incident on the layer at (secant law).
- Find and of a wave at the height of .
Strategy
At vertical incidence a wave turns back where , Eq. (6.2.42), at oblique incidence, by the secant law, where . Above the peak density nothing is returned.
a)
.
b)
where , about half of .
c)
.
d)
At , , so
Answer
Check
. The wave crosses the peak, as it must, since . It escapes at vertical incidence but is returned at , since : oblique rays reach far stations with frequencies that would pierce the layer overhead. This is the origin of the skip zone of Application 6.2.2.
