Home exercise 6.2.4: A low-loss microwave substrate
A low-loss microwave substrate
#A low-loss dielectric (a PTFE-type circuit-board substrate) has , and the loss tangent at .
- Estimate , and the attenuation constant (Np/m and dB/m) with the low-loss approximation.
- Over what distance does a plane wave in this material lose ?
- Compare with the exact formula.
Strategy
For , and , since , Eq. (6.2.22).
a)
b)
.
c)
Exactly, : , the same as the estimate to four digits.
Answer
Check
The relative error of the low-loss formula is of order , invisible at four digits. Per wavelength the loss is , close to the rule of thumb , Eq. (6.2.23): truly low-loss. On a real microstrip line only part of the field is in the substrate, and the conductor loss of the strip is usually larger than this dielectric loss at . The dielectric loss grows linearly with at constant , which is why PTFE laminates replace FR-4 () at microwave frequencies.
