Problem 7.8.3: A TM_{010} circular cavity
A TM circular cavity
#An air-filled circular cylindrical cavity with copper walls and length is to resonate at in the TM mode.
- Find the radius .
- Find the quality factor and the 3-dB bandwidth.
- Find the next two resonances and their modes.
- How long may the cavity be made before TM is no longer the lowest mode?
TM has no variation, so its frequency fixes alone. The competitors are TM (also ) and the modes TE and TM, whose frequencies depend on .
and :
With and the radius in cm:
The next two are TM at and TE at .
TE falls below TM when , that is for
For longer cavities TE drops below .
On the mode chart () the cavity sits at , and the TM line is at , the value of the chart. TE there: and , as found.
A short cavity ( large) pushes all the lines up and leaves TM alone at the bottom (Figure 7.8.24b). Making the cavity longer raises through the factor , but beyond TE becomes the lowest mode and the clean spectrum is lost. Note the units of the shortcut: , which is the same as .
