7.4.5 TM modes

For a TM mode , and by Eq. (7.4.10)

The wall condition must hold for every , and is not zero for every . Therefore : the product must be one of the zeros of .

TM modes of the circular guide

The second wall condition, , is then satisfied by itself. With , Eq. (7.4.13) gives , which is proportional to and vanishes at together with . One condition is enough. The transverse components follow from Eq. (7.4.13) by differentiating Eq. (7.4.15). For instance , so that . Altogether (the factor omitted)

Note that also vanishes at the wall, as the condition on the normal magnetic field requires: the TM fields satisfy all the wall conditions with the single choice .

Definition · Mode indices of the circular guide

In TM and TE, the first index counts the full periods of the field around the guide (), the second index counts the zeros of the radial function along a radius, from the axis (excluded) to the wall: for a TM mode the zeros of , the wall included. Hence always, and there is no TM mode.

Figure 7.4.3a shows the radial profiles of for TM and TM. The wall is placed exactly at the first, or the second, zero of . A TM mode would need the wall at the zeroth zero of , which does not exist.

(b) TE: H_z(\rho).
(b) TE: .
Figure 7.4.3. Radial profiles of the longitudinal field, with the wall shaded at . (a) TM modes: is tangential to the wall and must vanish there, so the wall sits at a zero of . TM has one zero along the radius (the wall), TM two. (b) TE modes: must vanish, so the wall sits at a maximum or a minimum of the radial function, a zero of . itself is not zero at the wall.
