Problem 7.4.1: Cutoff and parameters of the TE_{11} mode
Cutoff and parameters of the TE mode
#A circular air-filled waveguide has radius cm.
- For TE, the first root of is . Find the cutoff frequency and decide whether the mode propagates at GHz and at GHz.
- Which other modes propagate at GHz?
- For TE at GHz find , , , and .
- At GHz, how fast does the TE field decay? Over what length is it reduced by dB?
For this guide every cutoff is GHz, so the table of zeros gives the whole mode list at once. Once is known, the parameters of part (c) are the universal ones of Eq. (7.4.3), and below cutoff the same square root gives the attenuation constant.
Air, m, GHz. At GHz: cm, rad/m. At GHz: rad/m.
With ,
So at GHz the mode propagates, but at GHz it is below cutoff.
TM: GHz GHz, so it propagates. TE: GHz, TE and TM: GHz, all cut off. At GHz the guide carries TE, in its two polarisations, and TM.
, and rad/m:
At GHz and with
dB is reached after m cm. The wave impedance is then , purely reactive: no power flows.
cm , and . Below cutoff .
Part (a) is correct as stated, but at GHz TE is not alone: TM is just above its own cutoff, with rad/m and cm (Figure 7.4.10). In units of the TE cutoff the operating point is , just beyond the single-mode band . A designer who wants TE alone at GHz needs cm.
