Problem 7.2.2: The thickness window for TM_1
The thickness window for TM
#Specify the minimum and maximum thicknesses of a parallel-plate waveguide with a filling dielectric material polyethylene () in order to have only TM mode to propagate for .
- Find the range of .
- For (the middle of the range) find , , , and of the TM mode.
- Which modes actually propagate in this guide?
TM must be above its cutoff and TM below its cutoff: two inequalities for , each of the form .
, , , , .
So the thickness must lie between and , , that is .
and . Then and :
TEM, TM and TE.
, and .
TM can never travel alone in a parallel-plate guide. The TEM wave has no cutoff, and TE has the same cutoff as TM. What the two inequalities guarantee is that TM propagates while TM (and TE) do not. To excite TM alone one must use a source that couples neither to TEM nor to TE, for instance a -directed probe (only TM modes have ) placed where the TM field is strong (compare Exercise 7.2.2).
