Problem 7.2.4: TE_1 fields, power and copper loss
TE fields, power and copper loss
#An air-filled parallel-plate guide with copper plates () spaced carries the TE mode at . The peak electric field is .
- Find , , and .
- Write the phasors , , with numbers (take real at ).
- Find the power carried per metre of width.
- Find and the fraction of the power left after .
Start from and the TE formulas (7.2.12), , , , to find the constant . The power follows from , the loss from the current on the plates.
, : , . Copper: .
, , :
Matching gives
and then :
, with the peak , and the average of over the gap is :
After the power is multiplied by .
Compare and below with steps 4 and 5, then switch to TM to see its larger copper loss.
, and is out of phase with . The loss from first principles: on each plate the tangential field is only, , so both plates together dissipate per square metre of guide, and , the same value.
The power flows mainly in the middle of the gap, away from the plates, and the plates see only , here . That is why the TE loss is small: a TM mode in the same guide would lose , almost twice as much, because its full transverse is tangential to the plates.
