Home exercise 7.3.2: Frequency from a slotted line
Frequency from a slotted line
#A slotted measuring line made of air-filled WR-90 () is terminated in an unknown load. The probe finds adjacent field minima apart.
- Find the guide wavelength.
- Show that and find the frequency.
- Find and .
- How far apart are the minima at ?
Strategy
The standing wave in front of the load has minima every half guide wavelength. The dispersion relation , divided by , is the relation between the three wavelengths.
a)
.
b)
With , and , :
, so , and .
c)
and .
d)
At , and : the minima are apart.
Answer
Check
, and as it must be for a waveguide mode.
Remark
The minima, not the maxima, are used because they are sharper and their position can be read more precisely. The slot on the centre line of the broad wall cuts no current, so the line hardly disturbs the field it measures (Application 7.3.2).
