Example 2.3.18: Flux through a sphere
Flux through a sphere
#Evaluate
over the surface of a sphere of radius centred at the origin, where is oriented outwards from the enclosed volume.

On the sphere the outward surface element is, by Eq. (2.3.40), , and the field there is . Since , the vector character of the integrand disappears and only the magnitude of is left:
With and the substitution , . Hence
Answer
The field points everywhere radially outwards but is strongest at the equator and vanishes at the poles. The integral is its net outward flux through the sphere. (Here was harmless: it met in a dot product before any integration took place.)
