Exercise 5.5.7: Potentials of a magnetic field that grows linearly
About the further exercises of Section 5.5
Ten further exercises in the spirit of Problems 5.5.1–5.5.6, the home exercises and the worked examples, graded from easy to harder. Exercises 5.5.1–5.5.2 are about travelling pulses, Exercises 5.5.3–5.5.5 about the wave equation itself, Exercises 5.5.6–5.5.8 about potentials and gauges, and Exercises 5.5.9–5.5.10 about retarded potentials. They use only the equations listed at the head of this subsection. All media are nonmagnetic.
Potentials of a magnetic field that grows linearly
#Inside a long solenoid of radius the field grows linearly, for , with and . (a) Show that , describes this field. Which gauges does it satisfy? (b) Find , and its value at . (c) Let and . Find from to along the upper half of the circle , along the lower half, and along the straight diameter. (d) Is the solution exact?
from the curl of , since . The induced field circulates, so its line integral between two points depends on the path, as in Section 5.3.
and , so the pair satisfies both the Coulomb and the Lorenz gauge.
With ,
since . At , .
On the circle and is constant. Upper half ( from to ): . Lower half ( from to ): . On the diameter () : .
Upper half minus lower half is the integral around the whole circle traversed counter-clockwise: , Faraday's law.
Yes, inside the solenoid. does not depend on time, so the displacement current is zero, consistent with for a uniform . The components of are linear in , and , so and : the homogeneous wave equation holds in this source-free region.
Three paths between the same two points give three different answers: with a changing there is no unique voltage between and , only a path integral. A voltmeter whose leads run around one side of the solenoid reads one value, and leads round the other side read another. The same potentials with replaced by describe the field inside a transformer core, where makes the quasi-static picture excellent.
