The Lorenz gauge and charge conservation
#Prove that the Lorenz gauge
is consistent with the equation of continuity .
Hint: take the divergence of the wave equation for and of the wave equation for , and add.

Both wave equations Eq. (5.5.44) have the same operator . Taking the divergence of the equation for and of the equation for and adding builds the gauge expression on the left and the continuity expression on the right.
The divergence commutes with and with :
Multiply by and differentiate in time:
Adding the two equations,
If the potentials satisfy the Lorenz gauge, the left-hand side is zero and the sources must conserve charge. Conversely, if charge is conserved, the gauge expression obeys the homogeneous wave equation. If is zero before the sources are switched on (all fields and potentials zero), it stays zero for ever: the retarded potentials of sources that conserve charge satisfy the Lorenz gauge automatically.
Units: and are both in , and is in .
The wave equations for and were derived assuming the gauge. The result shows that this assumption costs nothing for physical sources: charge conservation is already built into Maxwell's equations (Section 5.4), so the gauge and the equations of the potentials are never in conflict.
