Home exercise 6.3.1: Reflection from a copper surface
Reflection from a copper surface
#A uniform plane wave in air is normally incident on a flat copper surface ( S/m, ) at GHz.
- Show that for a good conductor , and evaluate and the skin depth.
- Find .
- Show that the fraction of the incident power absorbed by the copper is , and evaluate it.

Strategy
In a conductor is replaced by , so . For drop and use . Then and is close to .
a)
, so

Answer
Check
The exact value of agrees with to four digits, because . The same result follows from Eq. (6.3.17): with and gives .
Remark
Copper is an excellent mirror at microwave frequencies: it absorbs less than , in a layer less than a micrometre thick. That is why waveguide walls and reflector antennas can be thin plated metal, and why , not alone, is the figure of merit of a conductor at high frequency.
