Problem 7.5.1: TEM fields of a precision air line
TEM fields of a precision air line
#A precision air line (laboratory standard) has an inner conductor of diameter mm and an outer conductor of inner diameter mm. A TEM wave of GHz with voltage amplitude V travels along it.
- Find , and , and check .
- Write the phasors and , and find the current and at and .
- Find the power by integrating the Poynting vector, and compare with .
- Air breaks down at MV/m. Find the largest voltage amplitude and power the line can carry (matched).
Every TEM quantity follows from and the single number . The field is that of a cylindrical capacitor, , so it is strongest at the inner conductor, where breakdown starts.
Air: , . mm, mm, . GHz: rad/m. V.
V and A:
Ampère's law around the inner conductor gives A . At the conductors kV/m and kV/m.
The field at reaches when
. At V the inner-conductor field is of the breakdown field, so the line can carry times more power: W kW.
kW is a peak-field limit for a matched line. A standing wave raises the peak voltage, and long before breakdown the inner conductor overheats: the average power rating of such a small line is a few hundred watts. Both the breakdown and most of the copper loss start at the inner conductor, where and are times larger than at the outer one.
