Problem 7.5.2: Design of a PTFE 50\ \Omega cable
Design of a PTFE cable
#A flexible cable is to be built with a PTFE dielectric (, ) and copper conductors ( S/m). The inner diameter of the outer conductor is mm.
- Find the inner-conductor diameter , and , , .
- Find , and the total loss in dB/m at GHz.
- Up to which frequency is the cable single-mode?
- At which frequency would ? Comment.
Invert for . Then the loss formulas need only , , and . For part (d) write both losses as functions of frequency: (skin effect), .
: , m/s, mm. Copper at GHz: m.
, so mm ( mm), and
m:
Total dB/m at GHz.
The first higher mode is TE:
(the exact root of Eq. (7.5.16) gives GHz).
With in GHz, dB/m and dB/m. They are equal when , that is at GHz, far beyond the single-mode limit of part (c). Copper dominates the loss in the whole usable band.
. In circuit form and Np/m, the same.
A better dielectric would hardly help, a bigger cable would. Above GHz a second mode with its own speed would carry part of the power and distort the signal: to go high, the cable must stay thin, and therefore lossy.
