Problem 7.5.3: The optimum ratios b/a with numbers
The optimum ratios with numbers
#An air-filled coaxial line for a transmitter feed has a fixed outer-conductor radius mm, copper conductors, and the breakdown field of air MV/m. Four inner radii are compared: , , , .
- Find and for each design.
- Find the largest voltage amplitude and power (matched line).
- Find at GHz in dB/100 m.
- Find the TE cutoff of each. Which design would you pick for a high-power feed, which for a low-loss link, and why is the usual choice?
With and fixed, every quantity is a simple function of : , , (field at the inner conductor), , and . One column is worked out in full, the others follow the same way.
Air, mm, V/m. At GHz m and Np/m.

High power: (). Low loss: (). Highest voltage: (). The line carries of the best power with only more loss than the best: it is the compromise.
Step through the four designs in the Example menu below and read and off the Best plot.
The optima of Section 7.5.5: is satisfied by (, ), and by . Ratios: and . The exact TE roots are to above the approximate cutoffs of the table.
