Home exercise 7.3.4: A dielectric phase shifter
A dielectric phase shifter
#A section of air-filled WR-90 () is filled over a length with PTFE (, lossless) to delay the TE wave at (reflections at the ends are ignored).
- Find and in the empty and in the filled guide.
- Find the extra phase per centimetre and the length for .
- Is the filled section single-mode at ?
- Why does a symmetric, full-width insert still excite TE only?
The cross-section fixes whatever the filling. Only changes: . The extra phase of the filled length is .
, .
per cm, and needs .
No. With , , while TE () stays below cutoff. TE and TE can propagate in the filled section.
TE has , odd about the centre plane , while the incident TE field and a full-width insert are both even about it. A structure symmetric about cannot convert an even field into an odd one, so TE is not excited. TE, which is even, is below cutoff ( in PTFE).
in PTFE from : .
Ignoring the reflections is optimistic: the wave impedances are in air and in PTFE, which gives at each face (Section 6.3). Practical phase shifters taper the dielectric ends or use quarter-wave steps. Moving a thin dielectric card from a narrow wall towards the centre, where is strongest, varies the phase continuously: the classic adjustable waveguide phase shifter.
