Exercise 4.1.15: Another given field
About the further exercises of Section 4.1
Twenty further exercises in the spirit of the problems, the worked examples and the home exercises, graded from easy to harder within each group. Exercises 4.1.1–4.1.10 belong to the theory of Lecture 8 (the Lorentz force, Biot–Savart's law, flux, force and the vector potential) and Exercises 4.1.11–4.1.20 to the exercise session of Lecture 9 (Ampère's law, coils and rotating charges, measuring and shaping fields). They use only
the two results of the section, for a long straight wire and on the axis of a loop, and superposition.
Another given field
#cf. Problem 4.1.7
Inside the cylindrical region the field is , and there is no surface current at . Find (a) , (b) the total current, both from and from Ampère's law, and (c) for . Numbers: A/m, mm.
Problem 4.1.7 again: the curl of gives the source, the circle gives the total current, and outside the enclosed current is constant.
With only, :
This is the current density of Home exercise 4.1.5 with .
From the source: . From the field on the circle : , the same.
For , , so .
Numbers: A, A/m at the surface and half of that at .
Units: is A/m. Any that is finite at and continuous at is a possible magnetostatic field, and the source is read off from the curl. A field like down to the axis, on the other hand, would require a line current on the axis ( singular there).
