Exercise 5.2.2: Conductor or dielectric?
About the further exercises of Section 5.2
Three further exercises on the displacement current, in the spirit of Home exercise 5.2.1 and graded from easy to harder. They use only the equations listed at the head of this subsection.
Conductor or dielectric?
#A damp soil has and , and carries the field . (a) Find the ratio of the amplitudes of the conduction and displacement current densities. (b) At which frequency are they equal? (c) Evaluate the ratio at and at , and say which term may be dropped in each case.
Adapted from: B. M. Notaroš, Electromagnetics, Example 8.3.
Write both terms of for the given field and compare amplitudes, Section 5.2.3.
and : they are in quadrature, with the amplitude ratio
at .
The ratio is : at it is (the soil is a conductor, drop ), at it is (the soil is a lossy dielectric, the conduction current is a correction that cannot be dropped, but the displacement current dominates).
Units: is , a pure number. This is why ground-penetrating radar works at hundreds of MHz and above, while low-frequency fields are shielded by moist ground, and why the same material needs two different descriptions in the two bands.
