Exercise 5.2.3: Leaky capacitor
About the further exercises of Section 5.2
Three further exercises on the displacement current, in the spirit of Home exercise 5.2.1 and graded from easy to harder. They use only the equations listed at the head of this subsection.
Leaky capacitor
#A parallel-plate capacitor (, ) is filled with a lossy dielectric, , , and driven by with at . (a) Find the conduction and the displacement current densities in the dielectric and the corresponding currents. (b) Show that the capacitor behaves as a resistor in parallel with a capacitor and give their values. (c) What is the phase of the total current with respect to the voltage?
The two terms of are both present in the dielectric. Multiply each by the plate area to get a current, and read off the circuit elements from .
, with amplitude . Then
with . Multiplying by :
The total current through the dielectric is with
a resistor and a capacitor in parallel, both carrying the same voltage.
with , so : the current leads the voltage by almost . The loss angle is , with .
Units: is . The same two terms of that appear side by side in a material appear as the parallel and of the equivalent circuit: is the "dissipation factor" printed in capacitor data sheets, and is the relaxation time of Exercise 5.4.1 ( here).
