Problem 5.5.3: A field between two walls
A field between two walls
#In a source-free region filled with air, the electric field is
with and .
- Show that .
- Find the condition under which satisfies the vector wave equation, and the value of .
- Find the speed with which the pattern moves along , and the frequency below which no real exists.
The field has a single Cartesian component, so the vector wave equation reduces to the scalar one for . Each of the three second derivatives gives times a constant, and the equation becomes a relation between , and .
has only a component, and it does not depend on : .
The derivatives are
Substituting in gives for all , , , so the bracket must vanish:
With and ,
The pattern moves at
is real only if , that is above the frequency
The three numbers form a right triangle, , the :: triangle. Along the field repeats every , longer than the free-space wavelength because (Figure 5.5.15).
Only the pattern moves at . The field is two plane waves bouncing between the walls at and (where vanishes, as it must at a metal wall), and the energy goes along at (Section 7.2). Below the cutoff frequency, , is imaginary and nothing propagates. This is the dominant mode of the rectangular waveguide of Section 7.3.
