7.8.12 The TM₀₁₀ mode

The TM mode is the TM mode of the circular guide at its own cutoff (): there is no variation along at all. Its electric field is axial,

where the magnetic field follows from Faraday's law: for a field the curl has only the component , so , and with and (the resonance condition) the factor appears. is largest on the axis and zero on the side wall, is zero on the axis and largest at , where has its maximum (Figure 7.8.12).

In plain words

TM is the circular cavity's version of a parallel-plate capacitor (the end plates) with a one-turn inductor (the side wall) around it. Its frequency is set by the radius alone, and its strong axial electric field is exactly what is needed to push charged particles along the axis.

The radial dependence of the TM_{010} fields (data from data/cr-bessel.dat). The electric field is largest on the axis and vanishes on the wall. The magnetic field peaks at \rho=0.77a with 0.582E_0/\eta and still has 0.519E_0/\eta on the wall.
