Exercise 7.6.5: A silicon-on-insulator waveguide layer
About the further exercises of Section 7.6
Five further exercises on dielectric waveguides, in the spirit of Problems 7.6.1–7.6.4 and the home exercises, graded from easy to harder: light launched into a fibre, a bent fibre, a coating designed for a surface wave, a measurement of permittivity with a surface wave, and a silicon photonic waveguide. They use only the relations listed at the head of this subsection and Snell's law and the Fresnel formulas of Section 6.4.
A silicon-on-insulator waveguide layer
#Silicon photonic circuits guide light in a silicon layer, , thick, with silica, , below and above it. Treat it as a symmetric slab.
- Find NA, and the guided modes. Up to which thickness is the layer single-mode?
- Solve for TE and TM: , , . How large is the birefringence?
- For TE: the field at the faces relative to the centre, the decay length and the power fraction in the silicon.
- Two such layers face each other across silica. At which gap has the TE field of one fallen to at the face of the other? The same for TM.
The same slab equations as in Problem 7.6.1, now with a very large index contrast. The TM factor is far from , so TE and TM differ strongly, unlike in the weakly guiding film of Home exercise 7.6.1.
, and
only TE and TM. The layer is single-mode up to .
TE, : , . With ,
TM, : , , , . The birefringence is .
: the field at the faces is of its central value. . With and ,
: for TE. TM has , so .
Both effective indices lie between and . For TE, gives the ray angle , beyond the critical angle .
A decay length of lets silicon waveguides run less than half a micrometre apart without exchanging power, which is what makes silicon photonic chips dense. The price is the huge birefringence: TE and TM differ by in index, so a circuit designed for one polarisation does nothing useful for the other, and fibre-to-chip interfaces need polarisation diversity. (A real channel waveguide, , has a lower , about for TE, because it is narrow in as well.)
