Exercise 7.7.2: Will the board house meet 50\,\Omega\pm10\,\%?
About the further exercises of Section 7.7
Five further exercises on microstrip lines, in the spirit of Problem 7.7.1 and the home exercises, graded from easy to harder: reading a time-domain reflectometer record, the manufacturing tolerance of a controlled-impedance line, the quality factor of a microstrip resonator, the choice of substrate for a radar, and a measurement of the substrate permittivity. They use only the relations listed at the head of this subsection.
Will the board house meet ?
#A microstrip on a FR-4 prepreg (Table 7.7.1: , ) is ordered with impedance tolerance. The process gives: etched width , dielectric thickness , between and (glass weave). (a) Find and at the nominal values. (b) Find at the two extremes of each tolerance alone. Which one dominates? (c) Find the two worst-case combinations. Is to met? (d) The board house can hold the thickness to . Does that suffice, and what should the nominal width be?
depends on and on only. A narrower strip, a thicker dielectric and a lower all raise , so the worst cases combine them. Hammerstad's analysis formula ( branch) is evaluated at each corner.

The dielectric thickness dominates: in is a larger change of than in (), while enters only through .
High corner (, , , ): . Low corner (, , , ): . Both corners lie outside to .
With the corners become and : still too high, because the nominal is not centred. A nominal width of () gives corners of and , inside the tolerance.
The worst-case spread (, about nominal) is close to the sum of the single spreads ( upwards, downwards): for small changes the effects add, as a first-order sensitivity analysis predicts.
This is why controlled-impedance boards are specified with a tolerance on , not on : the board house adjusts the etched width to the measured thickness and permittivity of the actual laminate, and checks the result on a TDR coupon (Exercise 7.7.1).
