Exercise 7.2.1: Charges and currents of the TEM wave
Five further exercises on the parallel-plate guide, in the spirit of Problems 7.2.1–7.2.5 and the home exercises, graded from easy to harder. Exercise 7.2.1 is about the TEM line, Exercise 7.2.2 about exciting the modes, Exercises 7.2.3 and 7.2.4 about the TE and TM modes at work, and Exercise 7.2.5 about the conductor losses.
Charges and currents of the TEM wave
#An air-filled parallel-plate line with and strips wide (fringing neglected) carries the TEM wave , at .
- Find the surface charge density on each plate.
- Find the surface current density on each plate.
- Verify the continuity equation .
- Find , , , the charge per unit length , and show that and .
The boundary conditions on a perfect conductor give the surface quantities directly: and , with pointing from the plate into the gap.

Power: and . The TEM wave is alone below .
The charges on each plate form a pattern of alternating sign that slides along at , and the current is nothing but this moving charge, . The two plates carry equal and opposite charges and currents at every : the TEM wave is the wave of an ordinary two-conductor transmission line.
